Big-Mountain and Extreme Skiing
Defining the Discipline
Big-mountain skiing has no single governing rulebook, which is part of its appeal and part of what makes it genuinely dangerous. At its core, it is the discipline of descending complex, uncontrolled terrain — glacial faces, couloirs, cliff bands, and mixed snow-and-rock environments — where the consequences of a fall are severe and rescue access is limited or non-existent. The gradient alone is not the defining characteristic. A 45-degree groomed piste at a snowcat-accessible resort is not big-mountain skiing. A 35-degree face in a remote alpine cirque, with a cliff band below and no ski patrol, is. Context, consequence, and commitment define the discipline more than any angle measurement.
The term 'extreme skiing' entered popular usage after the extreme skiing competition series that ran at Crested Butte and Valdez, Alaska, in the 1980s and 1990s. Shane McConkey, Scot Schmidt, Glen Plake, and Kristen Ulmer were among the figures who brought the discipline into public consciousness. The language has shifted somewhat — 'freeride' now covers much of the same terrain — but the physical demands and preparation requirements are essentially unchanged.
The Terrain
Couloirs are the signature features of serious steep skiing. A couloir is a steep, narrow gully cut by snow, ice, or water through a rock face. The most celebrated ski couloirs include the Vallée Blanche descent from the Aiguille du Midi above Chamonix — not itself extreme but the gateway to lines like the Frendo Spur approaches — and the Paranoid couloir at Valdez, Alaska, where pitches exceed 50 degrees for sustained sections. At Chamonix, the Midi-Plan traverse and the Grand Couloir de Bellachat represent accessible entry points to steep technical terrain. In Austria, the steep faces above Lech and Zürs see expert freeride skiing in good snow years.
Face skiing — open, wide, steep terrain without the constricting walls of a couloir — demands different skills. Speed management through sustained turn-size control rather than terrain-assisted braking, reading variable snow conditions across a wide face in real time, and identifying exit routes before commitment are all critical. The North Face of the Aiguille Verte above Chamonix (around 1200 vertical metres, pitches to 55 degrees) and the Heckmair route on the Eigernordwand are at the absolute technical limit of what is skiable; these represent what was done first, not what recreational big-mountain skiers should target.
The Freeride World Tour
The FWT (Freeride World Tour) is the premier competitive circuit for big-mountain skiing and snowboarding. Founded in 1996 at Verbier, it currently visits five venues across a season: Ordino Arcalís (Andorra), Kicking Horse (Canada), Revelstoke (Canada), Fieberbrunn (Austria), and the iconic Bec des Rosses face above Verbier, Switzerland — a 450-metre vertical pitch with gradients to 55 degrees and mandatory rock features that separate the top-ten finishers from the field in most years.
Judging criteria include line choice, control, fluidity, jumps, and speed. A 'clean' run — no falls, no checks, continuous rhythm — scores in the control and fluidity categories regardless of whether the athlete chooses the most radical line. Elite riders like Léo Slemett, Kristofer Turdell, Piera Hudson, and Elena Gaskell have demonstrated that optimal FWT scores come from runs that are aggressive and creative while retaining visible control — wild enough to earn line-choice points, disciplined enough not to lose control marks.
Qualification for the FWT runs through the Freeride World Qualifier series, which operates globally including stops in Chamonix, Hakuba in Japan, and various North American venues. Entry to qualifier events is open to athletes meeting minimum skill standards set by the organiser.
Skills and Preparation
Moving into serious steep terrain without appropriate preparation is the most reliable way to get hurt. The specific skills required are different from conventional resort skiing in several important ways. Jump turns — a technique where the skier unweights both skis simultaneously and pivots them in the air — are essential for initiating turns on slopes too steep to carve or skid conventionally. At 45 degrees, a standard parallel turn entry requires an edge-set and pole-plant timing that is physically different from anything learned on a blue piste. Practicing this technique on the steepest resort black runs and with a qualified guide before committing to serious off-piste terrain is not optional.
Ice and variable conditions also demand specific technical competence. A steep face that appeared soft and skiable from the lift may carry patches of wind-loaded slab, sun crust, or ice under a thin powder layer. Reading snow texture from above before committing, and being prepared to down-climb or rappel rather than ski if the snow proves unsuitable, is the judgment that distinguishes experienced big-mountain skiers from people who are simply brave.
Physical preparation matters disproportionately. Steep skiing generates leg muscle load far above what a normal resort day produces — isometric quadriceps effort to maintain the balancing crouch, dynamic loading through aggressive turn entries, and the full-body tension of jump-turn sequences. Athletes preparing for serious big-mountain objectives typically spend the off-season on leg-dominant strength training (single-leg squats, leg press, step-ups with weight) and plyometric work to replicate the explosive unweighting demands of jump turns.
Avalanche Risk on Steep Terrain
Steep faces above 38 degrees are above the primary avalanche release zone — most natural slab avalanches trigger between 30 and 45 degrees. However, the run-out zones of those avalanches often cross the slopes that skiers use for descent, and steep skiing frequently involves crossing or stopping on slopes in the release zone itself. Every person venturing onto this terrain should carry a transceiver, probe, and shovel, understand how to read the avalanche bulletin (published by MeteoSwiss, Météo-France, the Austrian Lawinenwarndienst, and equivalent national services), and have completed an AIARE Level 1 or equivalent avalanche education course.
Steep north-facing couloirs retain cold, weak snow structures that can persist as buried facets or depth hoar weeks after burial — a notorious challenge at Verbier and at most high Alpine venues in drier winters. The Bec des Rosses itself has been the site of significant naturals in loaded snow years, and the FWT frequently delays starts or cancels stops based on evolving forecasts.

Access and Guiding
The International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA, known in French as UIAGM) qualification is the international standard for mountain guides who lead skiing on serious terrain. An IFMGA guide combines ski touring, alpine climbing, and rock climbing certifications and is qualified to assess and manage the objective hazards of steep mountain terrain. For anyone new to big-mountain skiing or unfamiliar with a specific area, booking with a licensed IFMGA guide is the sensible approach — not because the terrain is necessarily beyond a competent skier's ability, but because local knowledge of safe windows, descent routes, and emergency options dramatically compresses the learning curve in a discipline where learning the hard way carries unacceptable consequences.
