Ski mountaineering sits at the intersection of alpinism and skiing — it is the practice of reaching mountain summits and high ridges under human power, using climbing skins and lightweight touring equipment to ascend, then skiing down terrain that most resort skiers will never see. Its competitive offshoot, ski mountaineering racing or skimo, has grown from an obscure Italian and French mountain discipline into a full Olympic sport, entering the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games programme after gaining youth Olympic status in 2020. What Ski Mountaineering Encompasses

Elite skimo racers rank among the highest-tested athletes in winter sport on aerobic metrics — VO2max values above 80 ml/kg/min are common in the top men, comparable to elite Nordic skiers and road cyclists. The sport's demand for simultaneous high power output (skinning at steep gradients), proprioceptive skill (rapid skiing of variable terrain), and transition efficiency (skins and boots changed at speed) creates a training profile that combines high-volume low-intensity mountain work with specific speed work on course sections.
The physical demands of skimo racing are not well understood by those who have only seen it in photographs. A competitive individual race at World Cup level involves thirty to forty minutes of almost continuous maximal aerobic output at altitude — often above 2,500 metres — interrupted by transitions that require fine motor coordination in cold conditions. This combination is unusual in endurance sport and requires specific preparation rather than simply running or cycling volume.
For recreational skimo participants, the fitness threshold is considerably more accessible. Many ski tourers compete in non-elite categories of races like the Pierra Menta in Beaufortain, France — one of the oldest and most atmospheric skimo races in the world, run as a four-day team event through the Aravis and Beaufortain massifs — without aspiring to top results, for the experience of covering mountain terrain at race pace in excellent company.
Gear for Ski Mountaineering
The key equipment distinction in ski mountaineering is between racing gear, recreational touring gear, and mountaineering-oriented touring gear. Racing equipment is discussed above; recreational touring gear balances weight with durability and descent performance, typically at two to three kilograms per ski, using bindings like the Dynafit TLT or Salomon Shift that provide adequate resort-ski feel on the descent while remaining light enough for multi-hour ascents.
