Ski Jumping Explained
Ski jumping is one of the oldest organised winter sports, predating recreational downhill skiing by decades, and it remains one of the most visually striking athletic events in the Winter Olympics. A jumper accelerates down a steep inrun, launches from a takeoff ramp with an explosive leg drive, and then holds a precise V-shaped position for several seconds while covering distances that would be measured in hundreds of metres — during which they are entirely dependent on the aerodynamic forces their body creates to stay aloft and maintain control.
The Hill and Its Classifications
Ski jump hills are classified by their K-point, which marks the critical distance on the landing slope below which a jumper is expected to land in normal competition. Below the K-point, the landing slope curves outward and becomes less forgiving of late landings; beyond it, the gradient eases. FIS recognises several hill sizes: Normal Hill (NH) has a K-point of 75 to 99 metres, Large Hill (LH) has a K-point of 100 to 169 metres, and Flying Hill (FH) has a K-point of 185 metres or more.
The most famous flying hill is the Vikersund Bakken in Norway, where world distance records have been repeatedly broken. The current men's world record of 291 metres was set at Vikersund in 2024, a distance that requires several seconds of flight at speeds reaching over one hundred kilometres per hour. Oberstdorf's Heini-Klopfer Skiflugschanze in Germany and Planica in Slovenia are the other major flying hill venues.
The Bergisel in Innsbruck and the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf are among the most architecturally distinctive Large Hill venues, both designed or renovated in the early 2000s and functioning as year-round tourist attractions as well as competition venues. The Holmenkollen in Oslo, above the Norwegian capital, is perhaps the sport's spiritual home — ski jumping has been held on the hill in some form since 1892, and the current hill redesigned for the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships holds seventy thousand spectators.
The Physics of Flight
The core challenge of ski jumping flight is generating lift while minimising drag, which is precisely the problem aeronautical engineers face with aircraft wings — and the V-style, developed in the late 1980s, solves it in a similar way. In the traditional parallel style that dominated until the 1980s, jumpers held their skis parallel and their bodies in a nearly vertical position. The V-style, pioneered by Swedish jumper Jan Boklöv and adopted rapidly by the entire sport following its competitive advantage becoming undeniable, angles the ski tips outward and spreads the body forward between them, creating a wing-shaped airfoil.
The V-style generates substantially more lift than the parallel style at the same air speed, which means jumpers can fly further for the same physical input. The optimal V-angle depends on conditions — wind speed and direction, air density at altitude, the specific hill profile — and elite jumpers adjust their positioning through the flight based on feel and visual cues. In headwinds, which are actually advantageous in ski jumping (a tail wind extends the inrun speed but reduces flight lift), the angle of attack changes and jumpers must compensate.
The takeoff is the phase that most critically determines distance. The contact time between the jumper's boots and the takeoff table lasts approximately 250 to 300 milliseconds — about the duration of a single heartbeat. During that window, the jumper must convert downward velocity from the inrun into a forward-angled launch, timing the leg extension with extraordinary precision. Too early and the jump is wasted; too late and the body is still moving downward when it leaves the table. Coaches and jumpers analyse takeoff technique using high-speed video at 300 frames per second or more.
Scoring: Distance and Style Points
FIS ski jumping competitions award points for distance and style in a ratio that has evolved over the decades. Distance points are calculated from a formula based on where the jump lands relative to the hill's K-point: at the K-point, the jumper receives 60 points (on a Normal Hill) or 60 points (Large Hill), with additional or reduced points added per metre above or below that reference. The exact value per metre differs by hill size.
Style points are awarded by five judges, each scoring up to 20 points on the flight posture, landing (the Telemark landing, with one foot forward in a scissor stance, is required for maximum points), and outrun. The highest and lowest scores are discarded, and the three remaining are summed for a maximum of 60 style points. Wind and gate compensation points, added or subtracted based on wind conditions and the starting gate position during the competition, prevent jumpers from being penalised or advantaged by conditions outside their control.
The Sport's Governing Structure and Circuit
FIS organises the ski jumping season through the Ski Jumping World Cup, which runs from November through March with events across Central Europe, Japan and Scandinavia. The Four Hills Tournament — held at Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen across New Year — is the most prestigious circuit event, dating to 1952 and attracting the largest television audiences of any individual ski jumping competition.
The Nordic Combined discipline adds cross-country skiing to ski jumping, with athletes competing in jumping on the Large Hill followed by a mass-start cross-country race in which the jumping result determines the start intervals — the winner of the jumping starts first, and all competitors chase. It is one of the oldest Olympic disciplines and remains a uniquely demanding combination of pure power, endurance and technical precision.
Women's ski jumping entered the Olympic programme at the 2014 Sochi Games after decades of exclusion, and the women's World Cup circuit has grown rapidly since. Sara Takanashi of Japan has dominated the early period of women's international competition, winning multiple World Cup overall titles. The infrastructure gap between men's and women's programmes at individual nations is closing, though it remains a subject of ongoing advocacy within the sport.
Getting Into Ski Jumping
Most competitive ski jumpers begin on small training hills between 10 and 20 metres in length, often using plastic or artificial surfaces in summer. National ski jumping centres in Norway, Austria, Germany, Finland, Slovenia and Poland operate junior development programmes from age eight or nine. The sport is genuinely accessible at the entry level — small hills are not physically dangerous for children learning to land in good snow, and the technique coaching is well developed.
For spectators, ski jumping is one of the most dramatic events to watch in person at a major hill. The near-silence during the inrun, the explosive launch, the improbable hang time, and the crowd roar at a long distance combine to produce an atmosphere unlike most winter sports events.
